This past week I have had numerous conversations with Jewish day school administrators about how to encourage their teachers to be engaged with learning. The conversations are occurring in the context of YUSP promoting our certificate programs for next year but what I am learning goes way beyond the immediate priorities of recruitment. http://www.yuschoolpartnership.org/about-the-program
For many teachers and in many schools the idea of teachers ongoing learning leading to improving the learning of their students is not commonly held. If I may be so bold as to express it this way -- I have spoken to a number of frustrated administrators this week who are trying to engage their teachers in a desire to grow professionally but are not meeting with success in conveying the message. In many cases teachers are used to 1-2 day conferences or workshop and are uninterested in (and perhaps unaware of the research findings that validate) the real and ongoing benefits that accrue from ongoing learning in programs like the YUSP certificate programs that take place over 30 weeks, providing new ideas to test out in the classroom and support from experts throughout the school-year.
